Annual Events

The White Mass

His Eminence, Bernard Cardinal Law and now his successor, His Eminence Sean Cardinal O'Malley, O.F.M. have been most supportive of our endeavor and is usually available to celebrate Mass and join us for the evening.  Generally, this event has the greatest attendance  of physicians, and their spouses and is very popular with the Medical Students as well.  It is a grand opportunity for them to see that  Catholicism and Medicine are perfectly compatible entities, and actually complement each other well.

Each October near the feast of St. Luke, our patron saint, we host a program featuring Mass celebrated by His Eminence, a reception and dinner, followed by a speaker of national or local prominence. Past speakers have included:

1990 - Edmund Pelligrino, M.D.
1991 - John O. Pastore, M.D.
1992 - Barbara P. Rockett, M.D.
1993 - Rev. Msgr. Timothy J. Moran

Morning of Recollection

It is important for professionals to step back from their work occasionally to consider what they are doing in relation to God's plan for themselves and the world in general.  Starting with a Mass, followed by suggestions for reflection by clergy from the Archdiocese, it also allows the attendees to bond together as Catholic physicians.  The benefit from these Saturday morning sessions is subtle, but critically important, as it can align the purposes in one's life, adding spiritual value to our professional duties.

Spring Educational Meeting

New developments in medicine as well as new considerations of established Church doctrine need re-emphasis and re-interpretation on a constant basis.  Here we attempt, usually with a panel discussion, to explore these changes with experts in the medical field interacting with experts in the Church's position.  CME credit is available, usually for risk-management, although this varies with the subject. Previous topics included:

Fetal tissue transplantation
End-of-life decisions
Valid fertility procedures
Natural family planning
Organ donation
Physician-assisted suicide
Embryomic Stem Cells
Adult Stem Cells

Hippocratic Oath Ceremony

Medical students are offered the opportunity to pledge the 1995 Revision of the Hippocratic Oath. They also share in some of the experiences of practicing Catholic physicians who can relate how they have enjoyed successful medical practices without sacrificing their religious beliefs.
